There were so many positive aspects of this book. As a former sailor, I loved every bit of the sailing scenes. I also liked the struggle between commoner and the ruling class and the camaraderie of the wherrymen. I also appreciated that the main character is a female of color, and I really liked that the book was sex positive, stressing consent. I found the premise and the world intriguing: shadowmen, gods, and nations with different rules of law.

I think the characters felt a little wooden to me. The dialogue was often stilted and unnatural and would happen at unrealistic times. Some of the plot turns seemed contrived and then overexplained in the characters' dialogue.

Whisper of the Tide continues Caro's adventure, with all the same pirate escapades as the first book. The beginning chapters go a little slowly, featuring all of the angst promised by the synopsis, but it picks up from there.

Song of the Current captures the true swashbuckling flair. Spunky young wherry-man (rather, wherry-woman) Caro Oresteia has the confidence and brashness to lead an exciting adventure down waterways big and small. Recommend for the pirates, detailed sailing descriptions, and quirky sailors.

Atmospheric writing drew me in to this story and a gutsy main character kept me there. I love books about the water and Song of the Current, with its wherrymen and river gods, pirates and politics was just my sort of read.
