Frances Titchener

Nokkuð gott heildaryfirlit þótt í knöppu formi sé. Maður lærir alltaf eitthvað nýtt. Titchener einbeitir sér aðallega að stjórnarfari Rómarveldis og samskiptum rómversku þingmannanna við sterku mennina og síðar keisarana. Hún horfir síður til landvinningastríða Rómverja og nefnir t.d. yfirtöku þeirra á veldi Grikkja nánast sem aukaatriði og af tilviljun. Þannig má segja að þetta sé í raun fyrst og fremst stjórnmálaleg saga heimsveldisins og þótt fullt af bitastæðum aukahlutum fylgi með. Fyrirlestrunum lýkur svo með falli Rómar en ekki er sögð saga Aust-Rómverska ríkins að neinu ráði.… (plus d'informations)

This series of fourteen lectures from Barnes & Noble take listeners from 1200 B.C. to 476 A.D. The content is basic but quite entertaining. The professor has a very engaging non-academic style. For historians, it might seem too simplistic, but I think one must consider the intended audience.

The accompanying booklet outlines each lecture and adds supplemental material, including pictures and maps. At the end of each lecture section, there is a page providing suggested readings “For Greater Understanding.” We have both read a lot of history of this era, but we still liked listening to Professor Titchener, who has received many well-deserved awards for teaching excellence.… (plus d'informations)
