A.P. Thornton was a considerable authority in the study of the British empire. A scot, he went forth in the post WWII period and lived in other Commonwealth countries, finally settling in Canada. This collection of essays dealing with the colonial mindset, the propagation of trade inside the empire, and some musings on the effects of the slave trade is of interest to the student of the imperial artifact. He was a readable writer.
