A book on an important bit of Texas history, not written very well. It is a tad padded to make a full book, a tad repetitive, and a bit boring in spots. Beef from Spanish Texas fed Spanish troops fighting the British in the Gulf of Mexico region during the War of American Independence, allowing the Spanish to tie down a large number of British troops that could have been subduing Washington's forces in the Thirteen States.

A Spanish land grant made to Andrés Hernández and Luis Antonio Menchaca on April 12, 1758, with lands located in Karnes and Wilson Counties, is the oldest land grant on record in the Spanish Archives of the General Land Office in Austin, although there were grants prior to that date. Hernandez located his ranch headquarters as early as 1758; the four-league grant used the fork of the San Antonio River and Cibolo Creek as boundary lines and became known as El Rincon.
