Interesting to read a book about the Pacific War with an 'Aussie twist'. Clearly General MacArthur is not in high esteem among Australians.

A quotation referred to early in this book claims that Jack Nicholson does not believe that anyone has got near to capturing the real Nicholson in print. This is perhaps not surprising, given the fact that he will not assist a biographer but, I am sure that this effort joins the failed attempts.
Mr. Thompson is completely hung up upon the films and Nicholson's reputation as a womaniser. These are, of course, important aspects of his persona but, where is the information about his youth, his family, etc.? Nicholson finds out, in later life, that the woman that he thought was his mother was, in fact, his grandmother: his 'sister' had become pregnant at a young age and well, the rest is history. You may feel that this would be quite a significant event in a man's life but, it is dealt with in less than half a page, and then it's back to an affair and a film.
The Nicholson who comes out of this book is a rather boring lech. Whilst the latter may be true, the former does not gell with either his screen persona, or frankly make his success with beautiful ladies seem achievable.
