Gene Thompson, a novelist and writer of radio and television shows, died on April 14 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 76.
The cause was cancer, said his son David.
A native of San Francisco, Mr. Thompson attended the University of California at Santa Barbara and at Berkeley. By the mid-1960's, after working in advertising in New York and San Francisco, he began writing scripts for television comedies like ''Gilligan's Island,'' ''The Lucy Show'' and ''The Beverly Hillbillies.'' He also wrote for ''Love, American Style,'' ''Marcus Welby, M.D.'' and ''Columbo.''
His novels include ''Lupe'' (1977), about a Mexican boy involved with the occult, and ''Murder Mystery'' (1981).
In addition to his son David, he is survived by his wife, Sylvia; three other children; and 12 grandchildren.
