The Sense of Movement: When Artists Travel commemorates the BMW Art Journey, a joint initiative of Art Basel and BMW launched in 2014 offering artists opporrtunities to undertake journeys of creative discovery to a destination of their choice. This book, which serves as the introductory volume of the BMW Art Journey series, explores the motivations and destinations of artists of various disciplines (painting, photography, film, video, etc.), and for each the journey is integral to the art. In presenting thumbnail sketches and illustrations of men and women over the centuries who have undertaken artistic journeys through exploration, pillgrimage, displacement, ordeal, or even by journeys into a fertile imagination - including Albert Bierstadt, Robert Frank, Piet Mondrian, Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky, Dennis Oppenheim, Paul Klee, and Edward Lear - the book sets a rather lofty bar for the chosen artists whose books will follow in this series.
