Preliminary Review 6/4/17
The semantics of this book's title is the semantics of AI transposed to the commercial world. MarkLogic makes a data-base system that can keep track of explicit links that are designated as semantic as follows: Jim *lives-in* London; London *is-in* England. Hence at some future time the system will be able to infer that Jim *lives-in* England. Each of the starred links is a semantic link.

Back in the 70s and 80s AI began to explore these kinds of software mechanisms as a way of exploring semantics since no one knew how to do anything computational with subjective meaning, which is what linguistic semantics is about in principle. But all this gets blurry when there is not good definitions for the these concepts, that is, satisfying intellectually and having operational significance.
My interest in this book arises from my client's interest in figuring out the best way to incorporate a semantic layer to ordinary transactions in which numerical tags are the most important: the part number, if it's a component in a larger system, and than what is the whole thing called and what is it (a car, medication, a book, etc.).
More to come.
