A well-told story of the salmon cycle, beginning with the fish leaving the feeding grounds, working towards the coast, the estuary and the river, past dangers of porpoises, seals, and fishermen and up to the spawning beds, death after death on the way, until the rare survivors, facing new risks, go seaward again, while eggs hatch, alevins turn to parr and parr to smolts until the "first flood in May sweeps smolts away" to the rich feeding of the sea and the cycle begins anew.
