I had high hopes. Finally, a fighting sail story from the French side. Unfortunately, the characters were more caricatures than believable people. The plot was also quite predictable so I gave up after 50 pages. The author's other sea series is much better.

Not much originality to the plot; same villain, same locale with Mainwaring and his men getting captured and imprisoned in a ship. Hopefully, the third episode will show more ingenuity.

The first book of an old, but new to me, series about an American colonist in the HMS. Edward Mainwaring enters the HMS from a side, if not, the basement door by starting as a master's mate. Prejudices abound as he works his way up by his successful command of the lightly armed but swift schooner Athena.

This is a medium sized book in terms of pages (210) but it is filled with interesting and little known facts of Canadian History, facts that should be more widely known. I remember in Grade school studying James Cook during the year they taught us Voyages of Discovery, a year which seemed to be more about tracing out interminable maps and the artistic use of coloured pencils than much else and never once being made aware of his connection to Canada.
I later vaguely heard that he had surveyed Newfoundland and been involved at Quebec in 1759. That vague knowledge was the reason I picked up this book in an attempt to find out more. And more I found.
Why the information in this book is not taught in Canadian schools is beyond me and once again makes a lie out of that discredited canard that Canadian history in boring.
An interesting read, full of Canadian history, about an extraordinary man.
