Summary:
Saygee, a young Indian girl, asks her great-grandfather how he received his name. His name is Doesn’t Fall Off His Horse. The great-grandfather gives his story of the adventures he faced and how he came to receive this name. Throughout the story the writer gives details into the life of Indians and some of their rituals. The story takes place in Oklahoma with the Comanche tribe.

Personal Reflection:
I really liked this story because first off it occurs in Oklahoma. It gives insight into Indians and I learned some things about them that I hadn’t known before. The meaning behind their names is very significant, which I found interesting.

Extension Ideas:
1. Have the students explain if any of them know the meaning behind their name. Why did their parents give them that name? If the students are unable to answer this question, invite them to go home and ask their parents.
3. Give the students some background information about Indians and their history in Oklahoma.
4. Turn on tradition Indian music and teach the students an easy Indian dance.

In this story, we follow a girl called Looks Within as she joins an elder woman called Wisdom Keeper along the Path of the Quiet Elk. While along this journey, Looks Within discovers the magic of the natural world and the interconnectedness of all things. As someone who is a bit of a naturalist, I really enjoyed this book, and I also loved being able to read about a philosophy of living that is so unlike that of contemporary America. This book would be great for children as it exposes them to information about both nature and culture.… (plus d'informations)

This book allows the reader a glimpse of the ways on life for Native Americans. The story is easily understood. The main character is learning about her heritage as the reader is learning, as well. I recommend this book as an introduction of Native American understanding of the world and/ or life.
