Stowers book is a record of this history of the Waikato Mounted Rifles from 1860. From the authors website, the history includes: The Waikato War of 1863-64; the Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Hamilton Cavalry Volunteers; Waikato troopers in the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 and the First World War 1914-19, including the Gallipoli, Sinai and Palestine campaigns; The buildup to and the Second World War 1939-45, including a history of the Divisional Cavalry (Div Cav) during the Second World War; Post-war history and recent peacekeeping roles. There is a foreword by Jerry Mateparae.

I took this book out of the library as part of my research for a book I am currently writing; 'The Kelly Crawford family of the Waikato district'. I have three photographs of my grandfather, Walter (Darby) George Kelly (1907-1981) in what has been identified as the Waikato Mounted Rifles uniform and wanted to know more. My grandfather's brother, Arthur Edward Kelly (1886-1918), was also in the Waikato Mounted Rifles. He is listed as a member on the Cambridge Museum website: http://cambridgemuseum.org.nz/Military/waikmountrifs/waikmtrifs.htm.

I liked the hardcover format and the well laid out pages of this book. The contents page and rolls of names were great, but I would have liked to have seen a more comprehensive index rather than just names. All together though this is a fantastic reference book and an interesting story.
