Courte biographie
Judy Stone was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the youngest of four children in a Russian Jewish immigrant family. Her parents owned a dry goods store. She and all of her siblings became journalists, including her brother I.F. "Izzy" Stone. Judy's interest in journalism was sparked as a teenager, when she wrote a review of the 1936 film The General Died at Dawn for the student paper at Jay Cooke Junior High School. She dropped out of Temple University to work in a factory during World War II but kept her hand in journalism as the managing editor for the Square Dealer, her labor union's newspaper. After the war, she settled in San Francisco, working as a reporter for the Marin Independent Journal and later joining the San Francisco Chronicle. She was the most influential film critic in the Bay Area as the Chronicle's movie reviewer from 1961 to 1993. She also wrote for The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and many other national newspapers and periodicals. Her books included The Mystery of B. Traven (1977), Eye on the World: Conversations With International Filmmakers (1997), and Not Quite a Memoir: Of Film, Books, the World (2006).
