Courte biographie
Arvis Stewart was an American artist, illustrator and stained glass designer. Born in Turkey, Texas in 1939, he grew up in Amarillo, Texas and was educated at the Texas Technological College. Graduating in 1965, he married fellow student and artist Angela D. Adams and they moved to New York City in order to launch careers in book illustration. Working on many children's titles, they eventually moved upstate, and had two children. When the couple separated, Arvis Stewart returned to Amarillo, where he remarried and continued his career as an illustrator. A devout Christian who was active in his church and in the Gideon ministry, he became interested in stained glass design, and the bulk of his work in the 1990s was devoted to the design, construction and installation of windows and chandeliers in churches, businesses and homes throughout the panhandle. He died in 2016.

I'm not sure the illustrations would attract younger elementary or preschool students given the dense/detailed nature of the drawings compared to the more cartoon and happy styling of more modern picture books. The illustrations are very stylized, with lots of black lines and other use of black, juxtaposed against pastels. I wonder if this is a purposeful attempt to contrast the dark underworld of Pluto and the pastoral earth of Demeter. Abstract depictions of gods such as Apollo with detailed pictures of the upper and lower worlds add to the story.… (plus d'informations)
