- Ephrem the Syrian (Greek: Ἐφραίμ ὁ Σῦρος; Latin: Ephraem Syrus; ca. 306 – 373) was a deacon and a prolific Syriac-language hymnographer and theologian of the 4th century from the region of Syria. He has been declared a Doctor of the Church in Roman Catholicism.

A great and forgotten early spiritual writer. His thoughts and words express much of the early believers. His relevance still rings true to those who will take the time to listen.
Some of the hymns of St. Ephrem are among the most beautiful I have ever read, so far as I can judge from translation.
