- Zara Steiner, née Shakow, was born in New York City to a family of Jewish Lithuanian descent. She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1957 and Harvard University. In 1955, she married George Steiner, whom she met in London. From 1969 to 1995, she was a Fellow of Murray Edwards College, Cambridge University. As a leading historian of 20th century Europe and the USA, she is particularly concerned with foreign relations and international relations. In 2007, she was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. Among her published works are Britain and the Origins of the First World War (1977)
and The Lights that Failed: European International History, 1919–1933 (2005). Her daughter Deborah Tarn Steiner is a professor of Classics at Columbia University.
