Murder, She Floats is a quick read with a unique premise and feisty protagonist.

My favourite thing about this book was the mystery itself. It's a no-murder mystery that focuses on a treasure hunt for a valuable coin lost at the bottom of a lake. I've never read another cozy with a premise like this before! It's a fun twist on the typical tropes of a cozy. I appreciated how refreshing this read was.

I especially liked how much of a fighter Penny is. She's a fun, yet determined character. However, I do think that the book was a bit light on the character development, especially considering that this is the first novel in the series. At times, I felt as if I had missed chunks of character introduction.

This made for a slightly confusing read at times because this book has a fairly large cast of characters and a fairly quick pace. Sometimes, I found myself mixing up characters. I needed to flip back to previous pages to remind myself about certain characters and their backstories.

If you're looking for an easy read, this is a great option. However, if you prefer a more character-focused mystery, this one might not be for you.

When I read the book (September 2021), it was available through Kindle Unlimited.

cosy-mystery, murder, romance, suspense, friendship, family-dynamics

Well plotted mystery with lots of suspense, red herrings, and twists. Juniper and Jack are business partners with a romantic past who renovate and resell houses, and this time it's a Victorian with a ghoulish history in Jack's hometown. A number of the townsfolk are beyond odd, there's a new police detective in town, Juniper's BFF runs a shop nearby, and then there's that rising body count. I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable mystery!
I need audiobooks and the narrator is really good at understated performance art.

punny, humor, suspense, murder-investigation, theft

To begin with, the reporter/former PI/former cop is Penny Trubble and the top jerk is Ben Baboon. Gives us a clue, right? The rest of the primary characters certainly are as well. Having returned to her home town, best friend, and her dad, she gets in the middle of a treasure hunt and murder. Got me by the imagination on a summer day and wouldn't let go!

I am a cozy mystery reader and had the opportunity to read this book which is outside of my normal niche. I would classify this book as suspense/thriller mixed with a bit of humor and the unexpected. Kay is not your normal police officer being framed for crimes she didn't commit. She has sass, humor, and her wits. Along with a little help from her friends, she experiments with many disguises and finds her inner outlaw all the while trying to find the real criminals. This is the first book in a future series of adventures that I feel readers will continue to want to read.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
