Fans of supernatural romance and high school drama will enjoy the story of seventeen-year-old Sonia discovering her powers. Sonia is a Huldra, a Norse supernatural with the ability to make others (especially men) do her bidding. When she finally has a crush on a classmate, Anthony, she notices that he shares her interest in Norse mythology, and is strangely immune to her powers. But it’s not all smooth sailing between the two teenager supernaturals, it seems that Anthony’s mother and Sonia’s mother are deadly enemies in a battle over Huldra gifts and how best to use Huldra powers. Sonia and Anthony must figure out where their loyalties lie. Their adventure takes them through an invisible island, imprisonment, meeting Dark Elves and Light Elves, and many other challenges before resolution.

I liked that it was a twist on the typical vampire or werewolf storyline. I particularly enjoyed Sonia’s mom awkwardly explaining that one of the side effects of a Huldra’s coming-of-age can include being a bit oversexed, and that even kissing a boy will enslave him in her Huldra powers. Aww, poor Mom has to have the birds and the bees (and the ancient enslavement of men) talk with her teenage daughter!

Had me turning the pages

The book was a great read. It ended right in the middle of the action. I wondered what was up. So I read the description on Amazon. Apparently the author split the original book into three novels. So I was pulled in by the allure of the free book. But to cut an invested reader off after the novel is just getting started and charging 2.99 to read another 120 pages and then another 2.99 to read another 98 pages is just wrong.
I mean, it really is a good book. I'm cheap. I won't buy the other two. I would have if all three were at least 300 pages.
And if this one had been a full length novel, it would have easily gotten five stars. Easily.
