The First-Time Homesteader by Jessica Sowards is a fantastic introduction to homesteading. This book is the epitome of the extension of her Vlogs on Youtube, Roots and Refuge Farm. She covers many different areas of a homestead, such as chickens and cows and also gardening. I've been watching her Youtube for many years and have learned most of my gardening knowledge from her channel, so I was super excited to add her book to my collection. The pictures in the book are absolutely stunning and show the love and joy that she gets from her homestead and her family.

The First-Time Homesteader covers many topics with many important details. This is not the book for all the information you could possibly need for a specific topic, but it is a fantastic overview of the important things to know about several homesteading topics. I personally enjoyed the chapter about raising chickens, because my husband and I have been talking about raising chickens for many years and this helped to solidify our choice. I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to start homesteading or just likes to learn about new things.

An excellent book for beginning gardeners who are just getting started with growing food and are eager to build a happy, healthy garden. I’ll be recommending this book to my students, as gardening is part of the programs I teach and many of my students are just starting their first garden when we begin class.

Awhile back, I happened upon Jessica Sowards, Roots and Refuge Farm Vlog and was impressed by her sensible approach to gardening.

Yes, I agree with her! Growing your own food is empowering and homegrown tomatoes do taste better than store-bought ones. So, when her book The First Time Gardener Growing Vegetables came out, I eagerly awaited its arrival.

It is a wonderful book for those new to gardening and those who have been gardening for years, like myself. The book offers all of us the opportunity to review different styles and plants to learn to create a garden we'll love. While my favorite section is on verticle gardening because I have very little experience in that area, I thought The Foundation for Gardening teaches what we need to be successful, and Organic Versus Conventional Methods provided many helpful details.

I fully agree- gardening is hard work as you learn more as you go. It's been my experience that gardening teaches patience as often you must recognize that there are often unforeseen obstacles that will keep you on your toes.
