The author, while teaching Philosophy at Pomona College, feels that without philosophy, American theology "does not seem able to keep its God alive". [86] Finds that "process theology" has developed a new view of God. [100] Understands American Protestant theology to have a living "unity in the midst of intellectual diversity" [133] because of having a "clear concept of God". Noting that "concept" is shared with Catholic views, he seems to suggest examining first principles as part of constructive theology.
