Courte biographie
(From her website:) Ann Somerville grew up in one of Australia’s prettiest small cities. In 1989, she left Australia with a BA majoring in English, French and History, and a burning ambition to see more of the world and its people, and to discover this ‘culture’ thing people kept telling her about. In 2006, she returned home to Southeast Queensland with two more degrees (this time in science and IT), an English husband (and an English accent) and a staggering case of homesickness, vowing never to leave Australia again.

She now writes full-time, working part-time as a contract web programmer to pay for the small luxuries of life, but all she really needs is a laptop and an internet connection for true happiness. Her long, plot-driven fiction featuring gay and bisexual characters has been published by Samhain Publishing, PD Publishing and Lethe Press. Additionally, copious free full length stories and novels are available on her website. She also reviews GLBT fiction on Uniquely Pleasurable and blogs about writing, publishing, her life and many shiny distracting things.

It's a long time since I have read this one but didn't write a review at the time. Now - a few years later - I still remember most of the story. This is remarkable, because I read so many stories. But reading the title years later and knowing the story and how wonderful and unique it was (still is), that's only a few.
So..., really great and one of my all time favorites! Thank you!

This is it. I gave it a try and now I am dnf-ing.

I find it plagued with too many details. It's cold on too many levels, not just the weather, tho glacial cold and speed do come to mind. It's boring and depressing. There is a lot of dancing around the subject without actual action. Characters are so worn out, I am surprised they are functioning at all.

I am rating the 25% that I've read suffered through so far. 1.5 star.

Interesting fantasy about an fantasy world with some slight parallels to the China-Japan situation in the 19th Century. Kuprij, an overcrowded island nation under the domination of an absolute ruler, (Japan), attacks and occupies a huge chunk of Darshian, a technologically advanced but insular nation (Manchuria, part of China). After 20 years or so, the Prij want more conquests, and invade more of Darshian. With the help of another powerful nation, Andon (USA), the invaders are thrown back to their original islands, hopefully to learn to behave better in the future
We see the entire conflict from the view points of two characters, Kei from Darshian, and General Arman from Kuprij. Both arouse our sympathies and are really well crafted.
The story and the background are really well detailed, and gripped my interest from start to the end.
