The Audubon First Field Guide: Fishes is a comprehensive guide to learning about and identifying fish. It begins with background information sections on fish, including what they eat, where the live, how they're identified and named, and how they defend themselves. The next part of the book is dedicated to identifying specific fish. Each pair of pages takes on one fish, giving real pictures of it, describing it, giving clues on what to look for, size, habitat, a map showing the range of the habitat, and information on related species. The final sections of the book are made up of a glossary of terms used throughout the book, resources for further information, an index, and photo credits.
This guide is clear and easy to use. Large headings on each page make clear what information you can find within the text. The information given is comprehensive, but still kid-friendly. High-interest color photographs of fish and their habitats are used throughout and as background on the pages. The information given by the author is purely factual and adequately covered. Due to the comprehensive content, this guide is geared more towards older children, fourth grade and above.
