Critiques

A New Yorker is thrown by a blizzard/tornado into an urban fantasy world.

Everything about this movie should have made for greatness, but it just doesn't work. It's joyless and tedious. Exhaustingly tedious.

This story is a wonderful traditional fantasy story that involves a young girl named Dorothy and her sweet dog, Toto, being swept away in a tornado to the magical land of Oz. In the land of Oz, Dorothy and Toto meet new friends. Still bewildered, Dorothy is trying to find her way back home to Kansas.

I enjoyed this story because it reminded me of my preschoolers that I teach. On their first day of school, most of them are scared and come into the classroom holding a favorite stuffed animal for security. In the story, Dorothy and Toto were in a strange place and scared at best. After awhile my preschoolers warm up to each other and then it is all about being friends. In the story, Dorothy and Toto make new friends while on their journey to finding their way back to Kansas.

In the classroom I would ask the children to think about what Dorothy and Toto were feeling. Were they afraid? Why? This conversation would lead up to our own feelings and fears. Isn't it nice to have friends? The children would also draw a picture of the story and then they can re-tell the story in their words and show their picture to the class.
