I have no idea where this review went to as I posted it months ago! Only noticed it missing as I went to write my end of year reading roundup.

I received this book for free via the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program. The following is the review I posted at LT for it:

This is an excellent book for beginning yoga, particularly for older people and people with restricted physical movement.

It manages to refrain from both jargon and issues of spirituality. The photographs and the instructions are clear and helpful. Most exercises are described using a chair for support and many also are described without using the chair. Thus, many of these are quite useful as a break from work while sitting at your desk.

The benefits of each exercise are clearly spelled out without overstating the case.

I would recommend this book to anyone considering yoga but either turned off by its spiritual aspects or only wanting the physical aspects, and especially for older persons or the physically-challenged.

Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga
By Emily Slonina

After reading this practical guide to using yoga in everyday life, I am convinced that yoga should be taught in our schools at an early age. Why wait until we are older and more fearful of tiring this form of exercise.

The author outlines the principles of yoga in a very clear method using words and pictures to show that everyone no matter what shape, size or age can reap so many benefits by exercising their muscles and learning to relax.

This is a great guide to starting an exercising program at any stage of your life. Some poses have been modified to allow everyone to participate. Easy to follow and can be used at work, sitting at a computer, in nursing homes or any other place that just has a chair.

If you want to read about a book that can help you with the every day stresses and staying limber, then please read this book.

If you want the benefits of yoga but feel intimidated by yoga classes that seem to be for people who are already limber and fit, this book is what you need. The book shows yoga poses using photos of people at all stages of fitness. The Yoga style exercises can be done while working, watching TV,lying down or in a chair, including a wheel chair. This book is inspirational because it believes anyone can be more calm, more flexible and healthier by just starting from where they are.

Yoga as a discipline aims to unite body and mind to increase the well-being of the practitioner. Unfortunately, the Western yoga community has strayed rather far from these roots to become the same old "buy buy buy" consumerism dressed up in "earth friendly" marketing and the same old promotion of unrealistic physical ideals dressed up as "healthy living."

That's why Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga is such a wonderful and refreshing addition to the world of yoga publishing. In it, author Slonina offers a wide selection of yoga poses and routines modified so that "regular people - not advanced students or masters" (to quote the back cover) can begin to practice without feeling worried that they aren't young enough, thin enough, or flexible enough for yoga, or that they aren't rich enough to buy the latest "green" yoga mat. Slonina offers concise and understandable directions for each pose, with generous photo illustrations of "regular people" executing individual steps provided for visual learners. In addition, variations for pairs, practitioners with more advanced skill levels, and illustrations of the original pose are also included.

In addition, Any Body Yoga also offers hints for adapting yoga in the office in order to help combat the deleterious physical effects of being chained to one's desk for eight hours a day. Although some of these suggestions might not be as feasible for employees whose workplace adheres to a formal suit and tie dress code, or who share a cubicle with a coworker, it's nevertheless another nice touch demonstrating how yoga isn't the preserve of the well-to-do leisure class, but can be integrated into one's everyday life. Slonina also gains points for explaining which poses can be used to relieve the physical and mental stresses of modern travel.

Anywhere, Anytime, Any Body Yoga is an excellent introduction to yoga. By shifting the emphasis from buying the "best" yoga gear, achieving awe inspiring levels of flexibility, or fully understanding the theoretical underpinnings of yoga to how beginners can immediately begin to integrate basic poses into their everyday lives, Slonina's book has probably done more to bring yoga to more people than many other offerings in the genre.
