Courte biographie: Jan Geurt Siebelink (Velp, 13 februari 1938) is een Nederlandse schrijver en essayist.
Siebelink groeide op in een streng-godsdienstig christelijk gezin. Hij werd leraar Nederlands en Frans en studeerde in zijn vrije tijd Franse taal- en letterkunde. Naast zijn leraarsbaan begon hij te schrijven en bracht hij een aantal romans en verhalen voort.
Zijn belangrijkste romans zijn: De herfst zal schitterend zijn; En joeg de vossen door het staande koren; De overkant van de rivier; Vera; Margaretha en de bestseller Knielen op een bed violen.
In het laatstgenoemde boek vertelt Siebelink over de godsdienstige kring waar zijn vader toe behoorde en hoe hij daar zelf bij betrokken werd.
Van Knielen op een bed violen waren in 2008 meer dan 500.000 exemplaren verkocht. In september 2009 kwam de vijftigste druk uit.
Naast zijn literaire werk schreef Siebelink ook essays over decadente Franse literatuur. Hij is woonachtig in Ede.

De overkant van de rivier par Jan Siebelink

When De overkant van de rivier came out in 1990, Jan Siebelink was still a fairly unknown author. He became a top bestseller author in 2005 with the publication of Knielen op een bed violen, a novel about his father. This novel is a magnificent achievement. Despite it's grave depiction of the religious zeal of his father, the novel enjoyed a wide readership.

De overkant van de rivier contains the same main elements but is a much more classical novel, in my opinion a better novel, altogether. It has characteristics of the Dutch genre of the streekroman, or regional rural novel. Still, it is a very literary treatment.

De overkant van de rivier can be seen as the novel about his mother. This should not be taken too literally. The two novels are two very different stories. De overkant van de rivier spans a very long period, from the early youth till old age. De overkant van de rivier is also a truly magnificent novel. Beside the personal history, it describes the economic development of a community along the river, up well into the 1980s, when high ways and bridges took over the function of ferries to cross a river. The novel also contrasts the growing clash between old morals and modern selfishness, traditional life versus capitalism. But the most important and disturbing element in the story is how matrimonial harmony is disturbed and destroyed when the father falls for religious zealots. Only towards the end of the novel, it becomes clear to what extremes he has gone, secretively, and how this cancer has destroyed and eaten into the fabric of their lives.

Throughout the novel, the eternal beauty of nature and the landscape is a continuous presence, even though in the end even that is threatened.

De overkant van de rivier is probably one of the best novels by Jan Siebelink. It requires and deserves careful reading, and offers many rewards to dedicated readers.… (plus d'informations)

Oscar par Jan Siebelink

Oscar is a flimsy novella that reads like a film script. Jan Siebelink seems to have exhausted the base of his fictional work. Thematically, Oscar is closer to the novels about education or teachers. However, Oscar is not set in a school setting. The time setting, namely during the World War is also untypical for Siebelink.

It is a short novella with a clear-set action and an unexpected climax, quite unlike most of Siebelink's work, although the rivalry and the feeling of jealousy can be felt in some of his other novels.… (plus d'informations)

Hartje zomer par J. Siebelink

Hartje zomer is a selection of short stories written by the Dutch novelist J. Siebelink. As the credits shows, many of these stories were commissioned or written for special occasions, and published in various media. Having no relation to Siebelink's main themes, i.e. education and his family, particularly their family's strict type of christianity tied to their gardening business, these short stories appear uninspired and of little interest.

Een lust voor het oog par Jan Siebelink

Een lust voor het oog is the first novel published in 1977 by Jan Siebelink. His debut was published two yearsearlier in the form of a collection of short stories. The novels and short stories of Siebelink can de roughly divided into two categories: works that center on the strict religious background of his family and their family history, and works about teachers. Een lust voor het oog belongs to this second category.

Siebelinks school centered stories often have elements of the grotesk. The central persona, often a teacher of French language, is often portrayed as a stylish, affluent person, surrounded by caricatures of peculiar or even mad colleages and a weak principal. The development of the story is surrealistisch.

Swijgman starts working as a teacher at a school near his hometown. The school and the small community are a nest of intrigue. His initiation as a teacher takes place in an atmosphere of gossip, jealousy and backstabbing, which becomes as actual act in a play acted out on stage. Thus, life is turned into a absurd play.
