David Shub (1887–1973)

This is a really good history of the Soviet Union and the Communist Party during the period of Lenin's life but, after reading it, I still do not understand the character of the man any better.

Lenin, like Trotsky, Marx and Engels were members of the bourgeoisie; now, that doesn't preclude their sympathy and political effort belonging to the proletariat but, they don't seem to have any great desire to be a proletarian, or even to trust the proletariat to make decisions. Lenin is quite open in saying that a dictatorship is required as the workers are not in a position to make decisions in their own best interest. This seems dangerously close to a God complex: I know, better than you, what you want. I'll admit to being no expert upon the works of Marx but, I have not found this attitude in his oeuvre, he is an educator, rather than a dictator.

I am keen to get inside the head of Lenin, to understand why he could act in totally unacceptable manners - such as the authorising of the murder of hostages - whilst seemingly being a genuine believer in the rights of man. Sadly, whilst being a good history, this book takes me no nearer to that understanding.… (plus d'informations)

David Shub, l'autore di questa biografia di Lenìn, giudicata la più completa e la più autentica finora pubblicata, nacque e fu educato in Russia. Per oltre quarant'anni visse in intimi rapporti con tutti i capi della rivoluzione, sia come rivoluzionario, sia come studioso di cose russe. Fu membro del partito Socialdemocratico russo, nel 1903, quando
Lenin ne era uno dei capi. Dal 1904 al 1905 visse nelle capitali europee ove ferveva l"attivita. rivoluzionaria degli esiliati: Londra, Parigi, Ginevra, e qui ebbe contatti costanti con tutti i capi bolecevichi e monscevichi, compresi Plekanov, Axelrod, Bogdanov, Lunachanky, Martov, ecc. Nel 1905 tornò in Russia e prese parte alla rivoluzione del 1905 e 1906, dopo il cui fallimento fu processato, ed esiliato in Siberia. Un anno dopo riuscì a fuggire negli Stati Uniti, da dove restò sempre in personale contatto con le figure dominanti della politica russa, da Trotzky a Bukharin, da Kereneky a Miliukov. Il suo libro è pertanto basato su fonti esaurientissime e dirette, su una ricchezza di informazioni e di dettegli sconosciuta a tutti gli altri biografi. Shub, inoltre, ha avuto a sua disposizione tutti gli scritti di Lenin, e le memorie dei più intimi collaboratori.… (plus d'informations)
