General Sir Charles Warren was one of the most distinguished officers of his generation, a pioneer of archaeology in Jerusalem, a master cartographer, a reforming Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, a field commander with a chequered career, many successes, and one disastrous failure, although his role in this last was vindicated after the war ended, and, in his latter years, a pioneer Scout Leader working with his close friend, Robert Baden-Powell.
