A scholarly retelling of the history of the United States that focuses on the seemingly endless tension in North American culture between the liberty of independence (self-sufficient worth, contentment) versus the compulsion for personal achievement (accumulation, status-seeking, wealth). In Shi's account, this thread runs through history almost as a cultural pendulum, ever swinging and, in a sense, over-correcting, between the poles of rugged asceticism and wanton greed. Reading for my US History to 1877 class in college.
Yes indeed its a text book. Though I may have not picked up on my own, even after the finishing my American history 101 class I found my self reading section of the book. Obviously very informative but also very interesting and a good book to have around for those that like explore and know about American history.
