This is, by far, one of the best introductory texts I've used for ease of access to a broad sample of primary Roman sources. The material is ordered into 15 sections by features of Roman life, such as 'Families', 'Marriage', 'Housing and City Life', 'Occupations', 'Freedmen', 'Religion and Philosophy', and so on, meaning that a large quantity of well chosen sources are easily accessible.

This is an excellent book; that is the best way to describe it. The book uses both primary and secondary sources to illuminate the lives, customs, values, and every day workings of a whole world of different Roman people. This book describes how Romans lived, what they loved, their class differences, their gender differences, their social customs, and just… generally who they were. It has sections on bathrooms, sewers, contraception, doctors, state religion, prostitution, war captives, urban dangers… there are hundreds of things, really, and all uniquely fascinating. The best part of this book is the source material, though. In this book, a reader sees Rome through the eyes of a Roman or someone close to the Roman world. This sourcebook covers a wide range of topics in early Roman social history. There is a variety of sources, and only the most relevant information has been included. The sources are placed in context, but the descriptions still allow the reader to form their own conclusions from the material.

Provides a comprehensive overview of early imperial roman culture and society, citing ancient sources liberaly. I have found it to be well written and concise.
