Courte biographie
William Shaw works as a journalist and writer in the US and in the UK. One of his most noticeable[to whom?] works is the 1999 book Westsiders: Stories of the Boys in the Hood, which chronicles the attempts of a group of Los Angelenos to become successful hip hop artists.

He worked on Details magazine and remains a contributing editor there. For Details he spent a month in the Utah desert living with Stone Age survivalists, went undercover at cross burnings with the neo-Nazi Christian Identity Movement in Idaho, shot AK-47s with Zionist fundamentalists in upper New York State and spent a week staying at the Church of Scientology Celebrity Center in Hollywood. He started his journalistic career as the Assistant Editor of the punk/goth magazine ZigZag. Since then his work has appeared in publications around the world, including The Times and The Independent. His first book, Travellers, was an oral history of Britain's New Age travellers. That was followed in 1994 by Spying in Guru Land, an account of a year spent as a member of several British religious cults.

His book, "Small Ads", based on his Observer column, appeared in 2005 as A Superhero for Hire.

His recent works include police mystery novels based in London in the 1960s; the main characters are Detective Sergeant Breen and Woman Police Constable Tozer.

Shaw's police novel Salt Lane (May 2018) is the first in a new series which features DS Alexandra Cupidi.[1]

William Shaw lives in Brighton.

I was so pleased to find out that a favourite author of mine, William Shaw, is also writing books under the name G.W Shaw. This book is the first he’s written under this name and I’ve already requested his next one. Its a really enjoyable standalone thriller, fast paced with great characters. I read it in 2 days as I couldn’t put it down.

Such an excellent atmospheric start to a new series. I like this book better than ‘The Birdwatcher’, the prequel to this series. The whole book…..characters, great plot, location, fabulous writing…..make for a wonderful read. Roll on the next in the series.

This stand-alone novel introduces the character DS Alexandra Cupidi who is the main character in Shaw's series. This novel features William "Bill" Smith, a copper with a very big secret of his own--one revealed in the opening pages. He killed a man. One of Bill's neighbors is murdered, and he is sent along with the Cupudi to the crime scene. Bill realizes he doesn't really know very much about the man's past. He knew him through birdwatching. While most of the action is set in present-day Kent, the author does include some scenes from Bill's past life in Northern Ireland. Cupudi has a teenage daughter who is having trouble adjusting to her new home. It's an interesting--and different--mystery.… (plus d'informations)

This is a tense and suspenseful police procedural crime novel, set in contemporary Kent, England.
The story is briskly paced with plenty of action. Mr. Shaw is a good storyteller and appears knowledgeable about police procedures.
The star of the book is DS Alexandra Cupidi, who transplanted from London to end an affair with a married man, a higher ranking police officer. (He makes a brief appearance in this book). Cupidi is a strong woman who is focused but impulsive which gets her into unnecessary danger and trouble. She would be a pain in the ass to work with, despite being a good police detective. There's several other interesting police characters.
The Kent marshes play a background role in the story and there's interesting information about the geography of the area.
Recommended as a good read.
