Holy gorgeous illustrations batman! I love the colours, and the eyes...everything seems to glow from the page and all the characters are definitely looking directly into my soul :|
Ibn Sina was an awesome dude. This book includes a lot about his accomplishments and abilities as a doctor and scientist. The first-person narrative is kind of weird though, to echo a couple other reviews. I would have enjoyed it better in the third-person. Also, according to the author's note, the earliest copy of The Canon of Medicine is at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, so I'm going to have to go visit it soon!

Dit boek lijkt op het eerste gezicht een boek als alle andere. Maar niets is minder waar: de vorm is erg bijzonder. Haal je het boek uit zijn opbergcassette, merk je dat het een boek in harmonicavorm is waarvan de pagina’s zich tot één lange strook ontplooien. Je kan het boek in twee richtingen openen (en lezen). Vandaar komt ook de dubbele titel: Als ik dit boek open… / Open dit boek niet!
Lees je het boek in de ene richting, dan toont het een lange strook met enge, griezelige figuren. Op de ‘aangenamere’ achterkant vertelt een kind dan weer over geuren, telkens gekoppeld aan een gezellige thuissituatie. De illustraties zijn kleurrijk, paginavullend en ze vloeien in elkaar over. Bij de illustraties staat een korte tekst.
Zowel vormgeving als inhoud nodigen kinderen uit om het verhaal op tal van manieren te verkennen.… (plus d'informations)

First published in Arabic in 2010, this is an absorbing story of a teenager coming of age during the Lebanese civil war in 1987 determined to make more of her life than working as a maid for a wealthy family in Beirut, an arrangment her father made to help the family make ends meet. Sharrafeddine explores compelling conflicts and themes in the story: economic class, city life versus village life, the clash between tradition and modern society, and modern women challenging a strict patriarchal society. The story would probably have a stronger emotional impact if Sharafeddine had told the story in first person rather than third. Nonetheless, Servant is rich, insightful historical fiction about a brave young woman's self-determination. Pair this story with Zeina Abirached's graphic memoir, A Game for Swallows (Lerner, 2012).… (plus d'informations)
