Intriguing touches of wise philosophy deepen this fourth short story in the series. Without knowing the world of the longer series, readers might feel curiously unmoored as each short story begins. But this one grounds itself quickly in a child’s sense of loss, with coming of age on the horizon and revelations promised between the lines. It’s an intriguing standalone tale that promises much more.

For readers not already familiar with the series, volume 3 of the Aegis Chronicles will provide plenty of enticement to read more. The characters are more complex. The mystery is deeper and darker. And it’s hard to avoid being drawn in to the curious situation of these abductees. I was sorry when the story ended, and it’s my favorite so far.

In this second of a four-book series of short stories, readers are introduced to Tony as he joins a force dedicated to changing the world. “We will make it better,” he’s told, as Pheonix is introduced. “[W]e’ve gone beyond fruitless debates and elitiist postulations.” Something will be done on a global scale, but readers will have to turn to the novels, not the short stories, to find out more. Plenty of backstory is offered for readers of the series, and some intriguing enticement for those not yet sure.

The four-book Aegis Chronicles series introduces characters in the universe of the author’s longer novels. For readers of the novels, the short stories provide intriguing insights into backstory and personality. For the casual reader, they form a somewhat disjointed picture of a world – enough to entice, but perhaps not quite enough to persuade. Gwen teams up with another character, Marshall, to investigate child abductions, resulting in excitement and adventure, but little clear indication of where the longer series might take its characters. They are certainly interesting characters: a short story well worth reading if you’re already reading the series.
