- Maggie Pierce Secara was for many years the Countess of Southampton in the Guild of St. George at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire (California). She has also been active in Clan MacColin and the Kriegshunde Fähnlein, and directed both performance and costume. In the Society for Creative Anachronism, where she is Mistress Máirghrèad-Rós FitzGarret of Desmond (O.L.), for three years she edited Tournaments Illuminated, the quarterly journal of the Society.
A technical writer by trade, Maggie has a Master's degree from California State University, Northridge. She is also a working poet, with poems published in little magazines no one ever heard of. She and her very understanding husband live with their cats in cozy suburban splendor in North Hollywood, California. - Notice de désambigüisation

The story weaves through many times and places and lives, focussed on the drama between Aubrey King, also known as Oberon, the King of Faerie, and his long ago mistress, Perdita, with some jealous moments from Queen Titania. The narrative mostly follows Raven, the fae equerry to the King, and Ben Harper, a human musician. They are sent on a quest to save Aubrey, and by extension, the land of Faerie and the world of human-kind as well.
As in the first book of the series, a sound track of traditional music weaves through the narrative, reflecting the mood and echoing the action. The author has set herself a difficult task, with different lives in different times being interrupted by Raven and Ben, and then incorporated into history. She is up to the task, presenting minor characters with lives of their own, as well as her major characters and their urgent quest. It is set primarily in the modern day, in 17th century England, and Victorian London, with peeks into the timeless land of the fae.
I was delighted to dive into this world that mixes high fantasy and urban fantasy, and eagerly look forward to the next book in the series.… (plus d'informations)

A delightful modern and historical fantasy with a Shakespearean feel and a great sound track. Our hero is Ben Harper, a modern-day TV reality-show host who lives part of the year in a small Dartmoor village with his wife Mellis and small son he calls Sparrow. One midsummer's day, he runs into Oberon in the local pub, who warns him that Oberon's lady, Titania, would very much like to steal away Sparrow to serve her. Yeah, right. Ben doesn't believe it, either, and in his disbelief, he breaks a dragon-shaped gold arm-ring, and sends the pieces spinning off into time and space. He must retrieve them to save his family, and the timeline as we all know it. Ben broke it, and he must set the world to rights again. Oberon sends one of the fae, Raven, with Ben on the quest.
The quest is well-told, as it weaves through several time periods. The author has a felicitous turn of phrase that often made me smile as I read. The historical pieces felt true to the times, and the allusions in the modern pieces to modern popular culture keep the story anchored clearly in this particular time. Unlike many tales, this hero is a family man, and Mellis is not just a damsel in distress. Through it all is a lilting thread of music that will be familiar to readers who listen to traditional music. I was at once swept away with Molly, the beautiful redhead with a taste for adventure. I turned the pages and sat faithfully by waiting for Molly to be rescued from her dull and boring life, having been all but sold off to a foppish man rumored to have killed his last wife. Then Dick Prentiss whisked into her world, dazzled her with the promise of adventure, and together they set sail on a privateering adventure the likes of which I never could have dreamed, but was oh so glad to have enjoyed through this book!Steamy scenes, swordplay, and drunken folly abound in Molly September. I laughed, I cried, and laughed some more. Maggie Secara set in place a fabulous world based on historical elements and places laced with fantastical adventures and heartening romance. Her book has quickly risen to my favorites shelf, where it shall remain, well worn for its many reads!If you enjoy adventure on the high seas, a little bit of romance, and a lot of fantastic characters in your books, then you simply must go pick up a copy of Molly September! And while you're at it, go say hello to Mrs. Secara, because anyone who can transport me ship-side on such a believable privateering journey deserves a personal hello along with the purchase of her wonderful novel!… (plus d'informations)

The story also follows Silence Carew, an odd man of 15th c. London who also sees mermaids, and who feels they are a threat to his ultimate salvation.
The story winds through the two tales, revealing more about realms of Faeryland Ben had not seen before, and perhaps new to Raven as well.
I read this book as I was traveling in and around London, where it is set. I too, encountered mermaids (or at least, their depictions) in my travels. I enjoyed the story and I enjoyed my travels, and the juxtaposition of the two in time and space was delightful.… (plus d'informations)
