A most interesting account of the period immediately preceeding the 1938 Anschluss in Austria, and of the subsequent experiences of the author in escaping from Nazi tyranny. Although the popular view is that Austria enthusiastically joined Germany, this book provides evidence that considerable numbers of Austrians resisted.

The son's experiences in the German Navy and in the hectic days of 1945 are recounted in much detail (how could he recall all that detail, one wonders) culminating in an almost incredible trip through the snow into Switzerland.
