This free "First Reads" book started off better than I expected. The author seemed to draw a lot of style from romance novels, though this doesn't ever go down the path of actual romance. I think the parts that dragged this book down the most were the failure to really set the scene and a lack of cohesion to the main character's, well, character. She was a strange mix of personality types that seemed to jump drastically. The medical knowledge seemed less appropriate for a doctor and more like a person who has had a lot of medical problems.

Despite confusions as to waking, sleeping, and in-between modes (when she's already in a dream and someone knocks her out, where does that put us?) the overall concept is interesting and fun. I liked lots of large chunks of it, but it just couldn't pull itself up passed "ok" territory.

I thought that this was really good. I decided to read this book on impulse. I hadn't heard of it before but I thought that it sounds like it would be worth a try. And I was right. I was pulled into the story from the very beginning and it held my interest until the very end. I am so glad that I made the decision to pick up this book.

At the start of the book, Maureen is checking herself out of the hospital and she honestly isn't in the best shape. To make matters worse, when she gets home her husband has moved someone else in and wants to end their marriage. I wondered how this middle-aged woman who was still recovering from a pretty severe injury would handle a new case but I had nothing to worry about.

Maureen works for a special department within the FBI that deals with paranormal issues. An old friend and co-worker wants her help at the retirement home he just bought so she moves in. Let's just say that Maureen doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the residents. Of course, the residents are a quirky group of individuals led by a pretty uptight manager.

The action started in this book early on and it never let go. I loved the fact that since there were paranormal elements to the story anything could happen and sometimes did. I thought that the mystery was really well done and I wasn't quite sure who was responsible for everything until it was revealed. I thought that the mystery was pretty complex and I liked the fact that everything was wrapped up nicely by the end of the book.

Teri Clark Linden did a great job with the narration of this story. I thought that the really did a great job with the various character voices and was able to add a lot of life to the story. She has a very pleasant voice which is easy to listen to for hours at a time. Her reading only added to my enjoyment of this story.

I would recommend this book to fans of paranormal mysteries. I thought that this was a very well done story filled with fantastic characters and some interesting paranormal elements. I wouldn't hesitate to read more of this fun series!

I received a review copy of this audiobook from the author/narrator via Audiobook Boom and have voluntarily left this review.

If you want, you can order a dream, the dream your heart most desires, from the Dream Merchant. And if you do, Jesse might be the one who delivers it to you. She might also be the one who retrieves it when the time comes. It's okay, Jesse understands. Jess has a dream of her own. A dream of vengeance.

Jesse's called back to her hometown to deliver a dream. While there she bumps into her old boyfriend, the one who was at the wheel during the car accident that killed her father. The one who stars in her dream.

After an accident that breaks her dream jar and destroys her dream, and an illicit peek at someone else's, Jesse begins to question her own ideas about the past.

There's this new trend of series made up of novellas. I don't so much like this trend. Often the first book feels like setup, and that's how this book felt. It was a great prologue, but it ended before I could really get into the story. I will read the next books because I'm fascinated with the idea of custom dreams, and I'm interested in the characters of Jesse and the Dream Merchant. I just wish this had been a novel instead of a novella.

First of all, Thanks to NetGalley for giving me a chance to read and review this book!

Short Blurb:

Shadow Valley, a retirement home that Maureen Keslyn both owns and resides in, hasn't quite recovered from its last battle with the supernatural. Nor have the members of Maureen's team. Jake, the sheriff who has come to believe in powers beyond what he can see, nevertheless remains skeptical on how to deal with those powers when they become malevolent. Matt, the cook at the manor, as well as a federal agent, finds his loyalties fraying in all directions. And then there is Sophronia, the youngest member, a girl who has abilities beyond what she can control, and fears of how powerful she can become.
Into this powderkeg walks Jillian, the daughter of Maureen's former partner. Jillian once tried to stab Maureen, and her presence isn't likely to end more pleasantly this time around. She's up to something, and Maureen needs to find out what.
Maureen and Jake are called upon to investigate a suicide that looks like anything but, and their search through the history of their town turns up unsolved murders, and an evil that has been lurking for decades. To bring the fight to Shadow Valley gives them their best chance at overcoming a demon more powerful than any they have ever encountered--but it also puts everyone at the greatest risk. And when Sophronia disappears, the clock is ticking to find her safe, before she becomes the latest victim.

Cover Review: The cover is one of the simplest and most beautiful cover I've ever seen. It's something I'd be proud to display on my shelf.

Review:

World Tree Girl is an exciting novel with a lot of twists and a whole lot of suspense.

I immensely enjoyed reading this book, and it has surely become one of my Favorites.

The paranormal has been weaved with an extraordinary precision into a murder mystery, making this book an even exciting journey!

I loved the fact that the major characters were middle-aged, rather than the usual teenagers/twenties people that crowd the current thrillers. It gave the book a whole new class.

The sarcasm included was cherry on the cake, making this a complete, fully loaded experience.

World Tree Girl gets 5 stars for its utterly beautiful cover, and the even more exciting story!
