I don't even know what to say about this. Really awesome concept, really atrocious execution. Author has no feel for flow and no concept of how to build suspense. I'm pissed at myself for being too OCD to just pull the plug and move onto the next novel. One of those sorts where you get chapter after chapter of unnecessary background and awkward, forced dialogue.

Definitely skip it.

This is book two in the series and while the story can be read as a standalone, reading the first book will help with the setting. The gritty story starts from page one with little references to the past so readers can catch up with the situation at hand. Jake has to act if he wants to protect his ex-partner and ex-fiancée from a great enemy.

There are three events to take place to torture Jake: his house burning down, the kidnap of his ex-fiancée's newborn child, and the kidnap of his ex-partner. The arson is done within a matter of pages, the kidnap has unclear details, and the rest of the book follows Jake trying to rescue his ex-partner while a second attempt of kidnapping the child is mulled over. Along the way there is bloodshed until only Jake and his great enemy are the only immortals left.

The story is at times difficult to follow. At the hospital, Jake is aware the nurse is unusual but is too persistent to perform demonstrations to Cindy and Derrick. He even notices the nurse is absent after his second demonstration but doesn't do anything until Cindy points it out. And while the characters are not supposed to accept everything Jake says at face value as part of their character arc, their reactions and thus the writing seems clumsy. Then the second attempt of kidnapping the child doesn't succeed and seem like an unnecessary reference when the main focus is on the ex-partner anyway. I couldn't connect with the character; for a great, retired detective he seems melodramatic. Nonetheless, the pace remained consistent throughout and darting from Jake, Buck, and Adam helped piece their points of views together by the final.

I have mixed feelings about this book, and caution myself about judging it when I haven't read the early books in the series.
Sarah Roberts can communicate with her dead sister, who gives her information and warnings to aid in the capture of criminals and keeping Sarah alive. Makes the story more than a bit interesting.

Two problems I had with the book - Sarah goes off a bit on her viewpoint of religion for a while in one part. The author did explain why he did that in his notes, but it felt jarring and a bit preachy to me. BTW, if you are adamantly pro-Catholic, you may not like this book.

Second problem was Sarah was a bit too super-hero, bionic woman for me. Injured, crippled, didn't matter, she was an incredible fighter and planner.

All that said, the plot itself, even without any of the paranormal stuff, was suspenseful and the writing well done. I'll probably go back and read some of the earlier one in the series to get a better feel if I want to commit myself to following Sarah's adventures.
