Richard Sampson

This is a short history of the city of Lusaka from the time the first whiteman pitched his tent in 1902 , becoming a whistle-stop on the railway, growing from village to small farming town, eventually attaining city status, and becoming the capital of the newly independent Zambia in 1964.

I grew up in Lusaka, having gone there in my infancy in 1951 when it was just a tiny place. Richard Sampson, a friend of my parents, was twice Mayor of Lusaka, and he wrote this book in 1960. My copy is his up-dated edition of 1982, and I was thrilled to find it in a pile of 2nd hand books in Beijing as it is now quite rare, and it contains a photograph of the Cathedral designed by my father. As far as I know this is the only authentic historical record of Lusaka over the first 60 years of its existance.… (plus d'informations)
