I enjoyed this story. Likeable characters, set in the world of buying and selling fine art.

When I read this about twenty years ago for the first time, I thought this story was fantastic, but reading it again I no longer feel the same.
The main characters are rather wooden, except for Charles's son Duncan, but the story retained the atmospheric hold on me from the first time. Katy and Charles's love story was written well, against the odds of Katy's incurable illness.

Adam and Libby really came alive with their dialogue, dealing with their ups and downs. I liked them very much more than the other characters.
Sebastian. Libby's close friend and neighbour, who watched over her protectively, was a kindly English eccentric/
The wicked Winna was icily beautiful, and every time she appeared I felt like hissing
Adam's family were cold and unfeeling, and I was, to them, as well.
Over the years, this story has lost its sparkle
