Sabuda was born in Pinckney, Michigan on March 8, 1965. He was skilled as an artist from a very young age, and he attended the Pratt Institute in New York City. His specific interest in 3-D paper engineering---pop-up books---was sparked by a book he received as a gift. Since 1994 Sabuda has afficher plus published at least one pop-up book annually. These books are typically childrens' classics like The Twelve Days of Christmas, Mother Goose, The Wizard of Oz, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Night Before Christmas and, most recently, Beauty and the Beast. Saint Valentine par Robert Sabuda

The mosaic illustrations are excellent and set the reader in the time period well, but narrative leaves a lot to be desired. The focus is on Valentine, a priest and physician, and his relationship with a jailer and his blind daughter. The story ends abruptly when Valentine is arrested and a note he leaves for the daughter miraculously heals her. There's very little religious context for Valentine as the Christian, the saint, or the martyr.

The 12 Days of Christmas : A Pop-Up Celebration par Robert Sabuda

"The 12 Days of Christmas" is another Christmas classic from Robert Sabuda, based on the beloved carol. The pop-ups are all done in classic white with colorful backgrounds, and only small touches of silver and gold add color to them. This Robert Sabuda is a beautiful book to enjoy every Christmas season.
