A great read and definitely better than what I was expecting from this book. It was offered to me last Christmas and I always thought it was going to be some boring book about two lovers who loved each other and couldn't be together because of the WWII and blabla, but I was so very wrong.

Spoilers: Even though the book deals with two characters who fall in love with each other, it is more complex than that. Their love story isn't what's most important in the book, IMO. I mean, yes, Xenia and Max's relationship is important and interesting to the story, but I found the history facts much more interesting and appealing, so I'm glad this wasn't 400 pages talking about their relationship, especially since they're not together most of the time. Max is such a sweet, loyal, generous man, by the way...you gotta love him.

Xenia is a very strong, brave and super independent female character. I admit there were some moments I wanted to punch her in the face for some decisions she made but I loved getting to know her as a person, it was interesting to see how she has matured during all those years (1917, the date the book begins until 1943).

This book deserves to be read by much more people and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about history facts, especially the WW2 and the Holocaust, and how it influenced people's lives.
