I enjoyed reading this book for two reasons. I liked the illustrations in this story, not only because they were nice to look at, but also what they represented. The illustrations in this story almost seem to glow. The people in the book have different tones to their faces that give off this ‘glowing’ impression, and make them seem more life like. The other reason I like the illustrations are specifically because of the depiction of the main character’s parents; the father is white and the mother is African American. The diversity of the character’s parents is refreshing since most books do not have mixed race characters. This makes this book a good one to have in a classroom, especially one with mixed race students, so they can better relate to the books in the class library.

The second reason I liked this book is because of the counting down aspect in the story. The main character is asking for things for her birthday party throughout the story. She starts out by asking, “I’d like ten prancing ponies,” next she asks, “How about nine juggling jugglers?” and this count down continues throughout the book. At the end she finally gets to one, which is for a normal birthday party. This counting down created suspense in the book. It also seemed fitting to be counting down to a party because it builds up excitement for the party as well.

The big idea of this story is not revealed until the very end of the story. The main character is asking for a lot of crazy things for her birthday party, all of which are too expensive. When she gets to the end, she asks for a party with close family and friends to celebrate with. The big idea of the story is that celebrating special moments does not have to involve huge, expensive things. Sometimes the best moments can be shared with friends and family.

A MOON OF MY OWN by Jennifer Rustgi tells the charming story of a young girl exploring the world with the moon as a companion.

This imaginative adventure follows a child as she visits the seven continents and experiences the phases of the moon. The book includes information about each area of the world featured in the story along with facts about the phases of the moon. The text concludes with activities for further learning.

Through shades of blue along with black silhouettes, the simple illustrations bring the moon and night sky to life.

Librarians will find this book to be a wonderful way to connect the science of the moon with an engaging narrative.
