Guy Cadogan Rothery (1863–1940)

I started this book and immediately got confused because it was published in 1995 but the language was extremely outdated, stuff that we'd generally consider having sexist and/or racist connotations today. I turned back to the front and finally realised it was FIRST published in 1910. That explained a lot.

The book is and overview of Amazon myths and also of female warrior bands from around the world, from ancient Europe and India all the way to South America. There's a lot of interesting stuff. The author pretty much concludes that though "the Amazons" as we think of them probably never existed, there is likely some truth to the legends, either in communities where the menfolk were often away or in temporary situations where women moved apart and established a separate society because of poor treatment or wartime necessity.

Unfortunately his conclusion is a little unpalatable to the modern day woman, as the author declares that no such society would ever last more than a generation or so with the women inevitably surrendering "on the men's own terms". Pfft, as if!
