One of Us is Dead by Jeneva Rose is a 2022 Blackstone publication.

A group of ultra rich friends congregates at a Boutique salon, making Jenny, the proprietor very successful, in the process. But, when one of the ladies goes through a public, high profile divorce, it shakes them all to the core and one of them will wind up dead- but which one?

The story has a fresh approach- challenging the reader to guess not only who the murderer is, but who the victim might be.

Although I have never seen a single episode, It seems obvious within the first few chapters, that the author is going for something along the lines of a Real Housewives of… atmosphere- signaling this could be one of those fun, snarky sort of crime thrillers. Naturally, these books are not intended to be taken too seriously, so I settled in for what promised to be a nice bit of escapist fiction.

Unfortunately, by the half way mark I was becoming annoyed with the characters, the introduction of unnecessary, unrelatable material, and found the characters and the dialogue were not at all funny or witty- they were just downright mean- which is not creative, nor is it entertaining in the least.

It got old in a hurry, and I found myself feeling rather bored with the whole thing and these extremely unlikable characters. But I was thinking the story might have a highly original twist somewhere down the line, so I stuck with it, only to find the conclusion to be unbelievably ridiculous and even convoluted.

Overall, this book appears to be well-received, so I’m an outlier here- but for me, it was yet another 2024 dud.

It’s a Date (Again) by Jeneva Rose

Losing your memories wouldn’t be easy ~ Waking to three attractive men claiming to be your boyfriend and not remembering any of them wouldn’t make it any easier. Throw in friends willing to help you figure out which of the three was the one you had decided you loved, dates to be gone on that might trigger or assist your memories, and wanting to get it right and you have a bit of a dilemma. One of Peyton’s friends told her to wait till she remembered but if she had…this book wouldn’t have happened so…off to the dating game Peyton went.

This was a fun, easy, sweet read that was somewhat predictable. It was a nice escape to spend time with Peyton, meet her friends, and find out how she finally decides who the man she loves truly is. You can’t always know what is inside a book by the cover and that is true of the men in Peyton’s life. I was pretty sure who she would end up with and the conclusion was satisfying as Peyton did end up with the best man for her.

The characters were well developed and easy to get to know. Mayba, Robbie, Debbie, Hank, and Anthony were supportive, kind, and honest. Nash, Tyler, and Shawn were worthy potential beaus ~ at least in the beginning and a few might be worth of stories of their own.

This was the first book I have read by this author and would like to thank her, Montlake, and Netgalley for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Pacing was a bit weird and very unrealistic.
As many have said, Adam is the most unlikable character possible, but every character is unlikable.
The ending is predictable. There were just enough threads throughout to make you guess a bit and doubt the ending will be as predictable as it ends up being.
