I wanted to like this a great deal more than I did. There were genuine friendships, real familial ties, letter-writing, and best of all, women with sexual desire who didn't feel ashamed of it or shamed others about it. Unfortunately, I never really connected to any of the characters. Henry's motivations for wanting to marry Caroline felt contrived and not at all convincing and the writing lessons with Frances also felt contrived. It seemed presumptuous for someone to ask such a thing after meeting maybe once. Frances' revelation didn't really strike me either. The allusions to her past were wimpy and the big reveal was kind of glossed over. I did really like that Henry's injury wasn't healed by the power of Twue-Wuv. Overall, I found the language to be unevenly anachronistic. I may try another book by this author, but it's not going to be a priority.… (plus d'informations)

A viscount proposes marriage to a respectable young woman, only to fall in love with her stepsister. At 419 pages it's much too long. The fiancee is an elegant, introverted blue stocking, while the stepsister is warm, outspoken and affectionate. The book needs to lose 200 pages, because there's not much going on.

There was a bit of mention in the beginning of the heroine being plain, but that was it; never came up again, no angst about it. I enjoyed this quite a bit even if it was a tad rushed in short story format. Overall a sweet and pleasant (and cleaan) romance. Cute, but I was anticipating an angsty spinster read like I prefer.
