Pocket book that contains non-geologist information for us amateur geologists. One page per rock with a nice picture of the rock is the majority of the book. There is no "key" as a biologist or botanist might like, which makes rock identification more difficult than it should be. However, the book fits in your pocket nicely, so I guess that's the compromise.

When roaming the stacks at Powell's Books, I noticed the staff recommendation tag. Book in hand, I recently spent a peaceful 90 minutes at Short Beach (Cape Meares), relieving the state of Oregon of about 3 pounds of agates and jaspers. Learning about that location alone, was well worth the price of this book.

not so much trails as little jaunts, mostly. true, i don't want to carry a pick, a pan, and a bucket too damn far before i find some malachite; but a mile? a mile?
