- Harry (Hillel) Rogoff was associated with the Jewish Daily Forward for fifty-four years -- a longevity perhaps unmatched in American journalism. Born in Berezino, Russia. He came to the United States in 1890 and attended Isaac Elchanan Yeshiva (now part of Yeshiva University) and the City College of New York. He joined the writing staff of the Forward in 1906 and became its managing editor in 1919; in 1951, he succeeded Abraham Cahan as the paper's editor. After retirement in 1962, he continued to contribute to the newspaper, for many years writing a bimonthly book review. He was considered to be among the finest Yiddish-language journalists in the United States. He died on 1 December 1971, at the age of 88.
