-This is a rare book. It may be rare because there are few editions available, or it may be desirable to book collectors and sellers. However, when I say it is ""rare " I do so in the sense that it contains information which Roget compiled which is generally unavailable --especially Roget's display of the use of words in literature, in an Oxford Dictionary manner.

This has been my companion through long hours of writing growing up, and often substituted for a dictionary during long hours of reading. My mom trusted it in her high school and college years. It's a trusted book and has handled years of use well. Even now that it's convenient to use computers for everything reference oriented, I still occasionally keep away from screens and fall back on my old text companions like this book.

Had this Book Club Associates' edition forwarded to me soon after its publication in 1973 when I was living in Scandinavia, short on Markka & pretending to be a budding author. It was an invaluable tool - to find that ultimate keyword your mind has let slip - and has continued to be every year since then although my oeuvre remains perilously slim!
A Thesaurus's role is to complement, not replace the inestimable Dictionary: as R.A. Dutch states in the preface (1962), "It furnishes no labels for 'speech level', for what is scholarly, literary or vulgar, or archaic and obsolete" (and certainly this Edition along with me is bordering on that last vestige of practical usefulness that was my ambition and is now for youthful aspiring writers).… (plus d'informations)
