This 1983 biography of Willa Cather is not thought too much of within the Cather scholarly community. Robinson didn't have the academic degrees of other Cather biographers, so her effort is largely dismissed in Cather studies. In 284 pages, of course the biographer has not covered the complete life of Cather. However, I found Robinson's biography to be engaging and very readable. Although not a comprehensive life, Robinson has done a good job in making her subject accessible to a lay audience.
1921 Willa: The Life of Willa Cather, by Phyllis C. Robinson (read 16 Apr 1985) This is a 1983 biography of an author most of whose work I have read. It is not a pretentious or scholarly life, but I enjoyed every page. Her books are still fresh to me, though her life was not. I remember still the day in April 1947 when I left Keane Hall (at Loras) and read, in the Des Moines Register, of her death. At that time I had only read Death Comes for the Archbishop.
