I really liked the story “Elephants Don’t Live in the Jungle”, which cleverly I thought communicates the inherent wrongness of children being in the hospital and the contrast of that with finding there some of the nicest most empathetic interactions with other humans you’ll have anywhere. It’s quite alternate-worldly, the children’s hospital. As a parent who has spent nights in one I am probably primed to be sensitive to such stories, most famously represented by Lorrie Moore’s incredible “People Like That Are the Only People Here”. Richards’ story is a fine example.

Other stories were earnestly well-meaning with well-meaning political and social messages but weighed down by obviousness and over-reportage. Damascus 5* being the most notable culprit.

Several stories dealt with troubled marriages, most interestingly the title story which provides an admirably attention-grabbing title. It was the pick of that bunch. Then there’s a seemingly eerie supernatural story involving a little girl which fits in rather oddly with the rest of the collection, though it’s not a bad one.

I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book in the trilogy.
Jacqueline Huston is half Banshee and much has changed for her she has come into her Banshee Heritage, dating a Wizard and trying to control her powers. The Brother hood of the Wizards of Merlin are out for her blood because she killed one of their own, even though he tried to kill her and her loved one's first. Now she has to deal with her Boyfriends Son who has his own agenda and he killed her Husband, Her growing powers, and Death himself. A funny, sexy, very romantic read. I highly recommend if you enjoy stories about the paranormal… (plus d'informations)

I had purchased a copy of this book before the opportunity to review was presented by the author. As always, I was not compensated for this review, and all conclusions are my own responsibility.

First in the “Gun Totin’ Hottie” series, and it starts off the series with every element checked off with panache. Elizabeth is a character with a skewed sense of humor that very much reminded me of Evonovich’s Stephanie Plum. The book proceeds with rapid fire dialogue, with funny nearly slapstick, portrayal of the scene around her.

At the heart of the story is the curse around the hidden treasure of Jean Lafitte, and just why Elizabeth has a coin from the treasure. Just how much she remembers beyond the drowning of her lover Juan, and just why he is in her living room.

Combining action, humour, some really sexy scenes and the myriad of beliefs that are common in the bayou country of Louisiana; the story rolls from one highlight to the next. Characters are well developed and their interactions are believable. There are a few nice twists that fit well into a serialized story – while this section is neatly wrapped and tied with a bow; there are no complete ends to any of the intermingled stories. A great start off for a series that hopefully, will center on Elizabeth and her new Louisiana roots.
