The Dead Hand Book: Stories From Gravesend Cemetery par Sara Richard
This is a Memento mori, with a dark sense of humor. The artwork is lovely, creepy and thoughtful. The "stories" are one to four sentences long, yet complete in themselves, or at least complete to their purpose of allowing the reader to imagine, especially when enhanced by the artwork on the facing page. This is not a novel, it is a moment. A moment to ponder the darker side of life and perhaps to allow our imagination to wander there. The only disappointment for me was that the inspiration for the thoughts was not made clearer. I finally figured out that the words in italics at the bottom of the page were likely the inspiration, but I wish there had been a little more connection to the original headstones.… (plus d'informations)
½The Dead Hand Book: Stories From Gravesend Cemetery is an illustrated collection of short stories from the titular location drawn and written by Sara Richard. A mixture of melancholy, the macabre, and the creepy Richard writes as short story on a gravestone or memorial on one page of a two-page black-and-white illustration that brings the words to “life” but reveals even more to the astute observer. As a longtime fan of Richard’s art, this 96-page book did not disappoint.

The story is short but complete, with arcs for both the ghost and the owl that end satisfactorily. The artwork is stunning, truly. The sort of art you’d want as prints for your walls.

Beautifully illustrated and a touching story. Good for kids and pre-teens. Eager to read more by this artist.
